Yes, this sweater is perfect for fall time! I just love the Smoke color also. It seems like a color that will always be in style! You better get working on your special orders for your sisters and Mom. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

Someone how cute it is, I accidently pt it on upside down and love the look of the pointy lapels. The collar hangs straight, covers my butt and the body of the sweater is less bulky. Hope you’re not offended that I intend to wear the sweater upside down — but not inside out!!

Ordered the same brand yarn and color online for a discount and finished this ina few days. Will be perfect for camping in the fall! Now my two sisters and Mom each want one of the same color..... having different colors for each would have kept it a little more interesting but the Smoke color really is beautiful. Thank you so much for posting and having so many helpful options to learn with pattern and video!!

It sounds like you answered your own question, Nikki! But let me know if not. You're on the right track by just making the same size rectangle as listed in the pattern. 🙂

I have stayed away from cardigans and sweaters because of how complex they look!
I do have a question, and am hoping you can help... I am using a 6 bulky instead of a 5, so I am having to work with slightly different sizing (I am working the pattern for L/XL hoping it will finish with a 2/3X ... should the measurement of our rectangle before assembly equate to the bust size? looking at the way it is folded that seems almost right to me... but I have never made anything like this before. I just don't want to do 60 rows of sweater, to find out I have made it too large or too small. Thank you for any help you can provide!

I used Caron Chunky Cakes (which is considered a 6 bulky) and it’s perfect. I also turned it into cocoon by crocheting the collar repeats all the way around instead of stopping and turning. Definitely making another and will make it a straight sweater. Thanks for a great easy to follow pattern.

Hey Lara,

It's kinda tough for me to know without having the piece in front of me, but I'd suggest counting as you complete each row and seeing if you can decode where the issue is happening. Also, it may be helpful to take a look at the stitch chart in the ad-free PDF as it could help you figure out if you're working one edge incorrectly and therefore losing a stitch somewhere.

I hope that helps! I completely understand your frustration with frogging. 🙁

I love this sweater and am so excited to make it. I've started the pattern and just did a check of my stitch count. Unfortunately I'm into the 7th repeat of rows 2-4. I'm making the L/XL. I counted my stitched on the SC row and I now have 96 stitches but started with 107. Any ideas of where I started to decrease?? I'm so sad to pull this all out but I'm determined because I know my best friend would LOVE this sweater and her birthday is coming up next month.

Thanks in advance for the assistance!

yes! You are correct on all aspects. 🙂 Chain a S/M, but work the length of a M/L or until you have the length you desire. Then you'll do the collar and sleeves as instructed. 🙂

I think it transitions between fall, winter and spring pretty well. The holes in it make it wearable in slightly warmer weather, but with a long-sleeved shirt underneath, the chunky yarn can keep you pretty warm. Hope that helps!

I have pretty much finished the rectangle. I am using a 6 weight (that is all that is carried locally without ordering) I couldn’t quite get the same stitch size according to gauge but I just went with it. I am going for the 13 window size and am on my 8th skien at about the 11th row of windows. It is quite heavy but with its “airyness” and no buttons I think it’s gonna be great. I’m excited to finish in time for the holidays to have a lil something new to wear nd to boast that I made it 🙂 thanks so much for the video tutorial, without it I would not have been able to crochet it.
Ps. I love your grey hoody/ poncho with the pocket in front. I think it’s short sleeved. Please make a video so I can make it. 🙂 thanks so much Jess

Hey Angela,

It kinda depends what you're trying to affect. Is the whole shrug feeling too tight around your body? If so, adding a bit more collar could allow you to let the shrug part of the sweater hang off you a bit more while the collar compensates. That said, adding the collar won't actually affect the true width of the sweater, unfortunately.

Yes! I totally think you could. Check out how the hood is constructed in this sweater (it's basically just a rectangle folded in half) because I think that could be a good starting point for constructing your own hood. )

Hey Sue,

I have seen some people on Instagram post photos with Wool Ease Thick & Quick. My suggestion would be to make a gauge swatch and then adjust your ch to fit the initial rectangle length I mention in the pattern. Hope that makes sense. 🙂

Feel free to come back here and comment with what worked for you so others can know too!

My gauge swatch came out perfectly, but I didn't measure my chain so my width ended up short. I seem to be crocheting too tightly... overcompensating.

I will be adding more rows for heigth for that reason. My question is: If I crochet more rows 1-3 for the collar will that help with width?

Yes! You could add more rows to the bottom of the sweater before working the collar. Similarly, you could just make a taller rectangle and then add the collar. 🙂

Hey Eve,

I think I understand what you're asking, but correct me if I'm wrong. The length will be the same as the height of your finished rectangle, since it's basically just the same rectangle but seamed at the corners. (This sizes are listed in the pattern.)

Cheers,

Hey Danielle,

I think the confusion may lie in that the stitch count at the end of the row is counting all the stitches (including ch spaces, etc). So it sounds like you're probably right about on the money having 60 dc...? (Assuming there are ch 1 sps between them.)

I'm doing the 2xl 3xl version.. I've chained 122 but with skipping 6 stiches for the first DC and then skipping 1 ch after that I only have 60 DC not 119 DC as mentioned in the pattern.. Should my foundation chain be 238 not 122? To give me the 119 Doc's?

Also do you know how much yards of yarn should be used for the 2xl 3xl version?

Thanks so much totally excited to make this one!!

Hey Sandy,

Adding the collar should help with that quite a bit because it'll cover your shoulders more and you can flip the top part of the collar over to create a little more balance in the overall sweater. If that doesn't cut it though, you could always add some additional collar rows to balance things out. 🙂

Hmm. I'm sorry to hear that, Connie! I like a sweater to cover my toosh as well. If you're up for the effort, you could take the sweater apart back to the rectangle stage and add some additional rows. That will increase the length at the bottom. Similarly, if you want to add some rows at the bottom similar to how you added the collar, that's could work as well. 🙂

Hey Lissa,

They should be! I would just check your gauge before you start so that you can ensure you're using the same amount of yarn per stitch that I did. If you find your swatch bigger than the gauge I list in the pattern, just size your hook down.

What a lucky daughter! 🙂

Hey Jadira,

I'm sorry you're having trouble! Are you referring to the the row of single crochet? In that row, you'll ch 1 and then begin single crocheting in the very first double crochet and each dc after that (incl the turning ch).

If you're talking about the row where you're creating Xs into the ch 1 spaces though, you'll ch 1 and then work the first "leg" of the X into the first ch 1 sp. If you're a visual learner, the bonus stitch chart that's I made for the PDF might be helpful to check out.

Let me know if any of that doesn't make sense!

However, I followed the pattern exactly, with the proper gauge and all, and it seems too short. I was expected it to be longer as it appears in the photos, covering the fanny. I even made it a size bigger and it just doesn't work up as shown.

First of all, thanks for a great term. I'm having some trouble. I'm 3 rows into the collar, and as I try it on, I can't get the sweater to stay on my shoulders. Just slides right off. I made it too big, opting for the xl size. Unfortunately, it's too big, but I love it, so I'm not worried. Any suggestions on how to keep it on? I also wanted to add a hood, but it'll probably be too heavy in back.

Hey Cheryl,

I believe I responded to you via email before seeing this, so I'll keep it short. 🙂

Yes, the gauge matters and it's measured in the by working the four row repeat the main rectangle is worked in. If you'd like to try a worsted weight yarn like Wool-Ease, I'd try holding two strands together and see if that gets you close to the gauge.

Hope that's helpful!

Hey Lona,

I list the size of the finished rectangle for each of the sweater sizes in the pattern, so the easiest option might be to measure yours and see if it's going to be the proper width. Are you using a category 5 yarn like the pattern calls for?

I have been trying to find the recommended yarn but can only seem to find online. I have some yarn in a weight 4 class. Lion Brand Wool-Ease. Would I be able to use that intsead of the tonal? I’ve tried getting the gauge by using differernt needles but having trouble figuring out the stitches to count to figure out the gauge as pattern has different stitches. Do I count the single crochet rows to get gauge? I read in a previous post that you can just crochet until you get to the measurements listed so does the gauge matter in this pattern?

“Also, you could just look at the overall rectangle measurements I list in the pattern for each size and make a rectangle the appropriate size. Does that make sense? ?”
So ... does a correct gauge really matter with this pattern? I’ve been trying to get the correct gauge with a different weight class yarn because the yarn recommended in pattern is hard to come by unless ordered online. I'm trying with a 4 weight class and 6 weight class. Also, when counting the stitches for the gauge, do you count the single crochet’s. Having trouble determing the stitches with the patterned rows. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. ? cheryl

Hey Klara,

The holes are because of the stitch used to make the large rectangle. If you don't want the holes, I'd just use a different stitch for the rectangle and follow the guidelines of how big I say the rectangle should be for each size sweater.

Good luck and happy crocheting!

Hey Bridget,

I think this will make a wonderful gift!

If I were you, I'd work the S/M size in your initial chain for the rectangle, but add the number of rows on your rectangle for the L/XL size. This will create a longer sweater that's not too bulky for her thin frame. 🙂
